Under large log - Stony Stratford, Bucks, Today (20th Dec). Size ~20mm.
Help with identification appreciated.

ps - Scooped a little hollow in soil to ensure not squished when log carefully rolled back. |

Hi Bruce, nice pic.
I would guess it's either a Rove or Ground beetle larva. Google 'ground beetle larva' images and you should find one on flickr in Essex that looks similar.
I'm pleased you considerately made it safe from sqishing!

I have a feeling that the expanded 8th abdominal segment places it as the larva of a Cardinal Beetle Pyrochroidae. Also the urogomphi (the two spines at the end of the abdomen) look to be unsegmented. Habitat, under bark would also fit.

Thanks for your help everyone. I've just Googled for images of larvae of the Cardinal Beetle and found one that could be it's twin brother (or sister).
