| | | [ID] Larva/Caterpillar? Hi Gang,
Quick question:
I've found two of these:
First one ended up outside and the second was too small to photograph so I had to draw it.
The body was translucent, you could see its meal inside. It wasn't very hairy but did have longer hairs around the end.
The first one was around an inch long and around 4 mm wide.
The second one was less than a cm.
No1 was crawling across the kitchen worktops and No2 crawled over my hat and dangled from my eyebrow (eww) (made me itch all day - phantom larva)
Whilst moving it would stop and raise itself up and sway side to side before continuing.
I didn't count how many prolegs it had - sorry.
We do have a bag of picked apples in the kitchen (home grown) I'll have to inspect them.
Any ideas?

| | | Re: [ID] Larva/Caterpillar? As good as you sketch is an actual photo is really needed, and knowing if it has any pro-legs is quite important. Its not Dipteran, its not coleopteran. At its rear end are they definately hairs? Regarding the apples it doesnt look to far off an apple sawfly (the clear ocelli on the eyes suggests its a sawfly) are there any mines in these apples? |

| | | Re: [ID] Larva/Caterpillar? It was just to small for my camera to focus on, even with the macro on.
I did view it through a X10 field lens as it was eating the skin of my finger, or trying to!
Yes, 4 hairs longer at the rear.
I'll have to wait and see if another one pops up.
Actually the big one wasn't that big, possibly 2 cm long rather than an inch.
The apples are fine, a few chem marks but the skin isn't penetrated at all.

| | | Re: [ID] Larva/Caterpillar? That looks very similar, thanks Lance.
Though mine was obviously much smaller, maybe a 3rd or 4th stage instar? (and earlier for the small one)

| | | Re: [ID] Larva/Caterpillar? the larva don't eat the fruit itself and they will pretty much eat any leaves.

| | | Re: [ID] Larva/Caterpillar? Most p&s cameras will go into super-macro mode when you place a hand lens over the existing lens, all the ones i have had do this, try not to go into digital zoom though.
Nice drawing btw ... | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
