Today I came across a species of caterpillar I'd never seen before.
My digital camera has been misplaced (and isn't very good either) so I couldn't take a picture of it so I'll do my best to describe it.
It was quite a plain caterpillar. No stripes/band/copious amounts of setae or spots.
It was green, except for it's front legs and it's head, which were brown. I'd say it's head was it's most distinctive feature; looking at it from the front, it looked like a cat's face which had been carved out of wood. It had two distinctive bumps on the top which really resembled cat's ears.
It's a looper. 3 pairs of legs at the front and 2 pairs at the back, separated by some distance.
It had a long, slender body. Approx. 6cm long, 5-6mm wide.
The body segments were obvious.
It was practically hairless. It had a couple of rows of setae, but they were tiny and hard to see.
If it helps, I live in the North-East of England and it was lurking amongst the
Crocosmia Spitfire.
