| | | Large White and Small White Caterpillars These 2 were eating my brussel sprouts today, loads of large and small whites so I doubt we will get any sprouts at Christmas. Is the small white naturally larger as a caterpillar or could it be that it hatched early so it has been munching for longer?

| | | Re: Large White and Small White Caterpillars Yes i would have thought that its the age difference that suggests the size, also some caterpillars are simply smaller than others, havent fed as well, have a parasite, had unhealthy parents etc. |

| | | Re: Large White and Small White Caterpillars There are lots of little tiny Large Whites too so that makes sense if they hatched more recently than the Small Whites, there are rather alot of both species!

Shirl | Hi Shirl,
I suspect that the Small White larva is further advanced (in terms of instars) than the Large White larva. A fully-grown Large White larva is noticeably larger than a fully-grown Small White larva!
Cheers,
