This beetle larva narrowly escaped the chop whilst wood was being split today. Its quite large (20 mm or so), living in felled Alder. 
Any ideas as to what it might be? My first point of call would be Click Beetle Elateridae.

Its the larva from one of the pyrochroidae. Looks like Pyrochroa coccinea larvae. |

Also if of any interest they are predatory and dont eat wood. |

In retrospect I should have thought of this. I felt it was too big for the usual Elateridae, but was heading off in a different direction. Pyrochroa coccinea is very common in the vicinity.
