I found this caterpillar crawling over my sons back while he was playing in the garden. No idea which plant source it came from and it could have been blown down in yesterdays strong winds. I would like to put it back on it's rightful food plant if possible. Any ideas anyone as to it's id? Length is just under 1.5". I saw the small tail and thought Hawk Moth but couldn't find a match.

A warm welcome to WAB Paul  You've found a great place. Your caterpillar looks a lot like Amphipyra pyramidea - commonly known as the Copper Underwing. |

Thanks for the welcome and the id Nick. Looks like a great website and I'll be sure to post more images. I have a hard drive full of photos, bit of a hobby of mine. I do digiscoping mostly but also some insect macros when I have time.

I agree with Nick.
The caterpillar feeds on a wide range of plants including Oak, Honeysuckle, Ash, Privit, Sallow & Lime. |
