| | | Mystery Caterpillar Can anyone help me with the ID on this caterpillar? It was about an inch long and was crossing the path on Mill Hill, West Sussex. The habitat is chalk downland.
Many thanks.

| | | Re: Mystery Caterpillar Hi,
I would say it is one of the Apamea species or Arches moths - Dark , Light or Reddish Light , but I wouldn't like to guess which.

My rather old Collins Field Guide shows the Dark Arches which was the closest I could find, when I first checked. My caterpillar doesn't have a dark end segment as is shown in the guide, hence my query.
I must investigate the other two possibilities.

I pored over a comprehensive guide at my local library today - the photos of all three "Arches" looked very similar so I bow to your inevitably superior knowledge on this one.
I see a frustrating summer ahead...!
