| | | Soldier fly larva ? On the rim of my compost bin- about 12mm long, I suspect it may be a soldier fly larva but is thicker and much lighter in colour than previous ones I have seen.

As noted by bugbotherer the small bugs are springtails ID'd as Hypogastruridae.
Genus = Ceratophysella. by our resident Flickr springtail expert (Frans Janssens).
One of the nice things about springtails is they seem to prefer the Winter so whilst the other bugs are decreasing they become more common.

| | | Re: Soldier fly larva ? Ive had a good long think over this one, and believe its the larvae of Syritta pipiens a common species which looks the same as the photo, it is commonly found in compost. So this could be your answer, and being a Syrphid is Transparent unlike Stratiomyidae larva.
