It looks like a Ruby Tiger moth.

Both suggestions look to be possibles but having closely checked out several other web photos of the Buff Ermine and the Ruby Tiger Moth (including images from this forum) I'm pretty sure that it is a Ruby Tiger Moth.

I'd go with Ruby Tiger ( Phragmatobia fuliginosa). It's about the right time of year to expect to see this larva (adults on the wing - and egg-laying - in September) and they are found on numerous plant-types.
They're a common species, found in lots of different habitats, but a pretty moth and a nice sighting all the same.
