| | | Caterpillar mystery (Think finally got the hang of it?) Can anyone put a name to this caterpillar found in a bed of nettles. I'm putting together a diary of flora and fauna of our local park and this one has me stumped. Thanks for looking. k9 [/IMG] [/IMG] |

| | | Re: Caterpillar mystery I think it may be some kind of gall or something similar rather than a caterpillar, I think it's been caused by some kind of insect, probably a wasp, laying an egg in the nettle which has caused this growth. Someone will know more about it than me!

| | | Re: Caterpillar mystery my gall book mentions several nettle galls.
One a rust Puccinia urticata seems possible. (stems bearing large, discoloured, reddish swellings up to 5cm long, also occuring on underside of leaves)
Another caused by Dasineura urticae (diptera) is possible but might be a bit small. (irregular, thickened pouch like swelling, on leaf blade, petiole or flower stalk, 3-8mm across)
Maybe if you google both possibilities you'll find it.
