| | | Re: beetle larva? I took a pic of one of these recently .... or one that looked very similar ... and it turned out to be the larva of the Green Dock Beetle, Gastrophysa viridula .... |

Many leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae) are very similar looking and I wouldn't want to id it. What plant is it though - Epilobium, willowherb? These have small blue leaf beetles whose name I forget, at the moment .... but probably something epilobii! |

There is no defence to that wayward piece of botanising . However trying to spin this some more If the population density is high will The DOC beetle larvae munch other plants nearby ?

| | | Re: beetle larva? Not in my experience - they might try something else but wouldn't stay long if it were not a Rumex or related species. You do, in windy or rainy weather (you may have had some) find insects on non-host plants but ... are they eating intensely?
There are lots of other green chrysomelids and more than one Gastrophysa sp ... I think!
Being an expert entomologist is useful but, in the case of leaf beetles, recognising the plant they're eating is far, far, easier! Not entirely reliable - some chrysomelids are polyphagous but .... as a starting point, identify the plant! Quote:

| | | Re: beetle larva? I totally agree with paul here that is not a dock beetle larva, there are so many different leaf beetles ID of the plant may help a great deal with ID of the beetle |

| | | Re: beetle larva? I think it's the large willowherb and this has several leaf-beetles listed for it included three species of Altica: Altica lythri (University of Paisley: Biodiversity Reference)
The larvae could be like this ..... http://www.inra.fr/internet/Produits...ES/7033841.jpg
I suspect that without rearing some, or going back in a couple of weeks, we may never know! Quote:
