Strange home for a Larva

I took these photos yesterday at Oxford Island, Northern Ireland. The casing looked like a wire cage. It was on a dock leaf and measured about 7mm across. The second photo shows the larva. I've only ever seen one of these before.

I can't give you an id, bu did the larva leave its cage for the second photo of its own will?

Sorry John I dont have an Id for you but I am sure I saw one of these in a llibrary book I returned last week. I will see if I can get the book again, but it wont be until Friday, I will keep your post in mind if it hasn't been successfully ID'd by then - best I can do.

Many thanks. Your help would be greatly appreciated. It would be nice not only for me but other WAB members to know what it is. The casing looks rather unusual don't you think?

Sorry John to let you down, but what I saw was the net casing of a Hoverfly -Mollota Sp, the bumble bee mimic. It was more brown than the spun sugar look. Good luck in your quest for an ID.

A type of beetle larva? not a hoverfly larva as its got a pair of large eyes, dont think its a sawfly either, hard to see from the photo but does it have any legs

Hi Gill. Your pic of the larva casing looks the same and also seems to be on the same type of leaf. Maybe my pic of the larva will help someone to provide an ID but at the moment it would appear that no one has any idea as to what it is. Anyway that's part of the fun. Hopefully an ID will come along.
