| | | Ladybird larvae question I have attached below two photos. One I took on Sunday of a larvae (dont know which one it is tho), the second one I took early evening today (Wed). I believe its on the same leaf and wondered if its possible that this is the larvae from the Sunday shot, please. If not, what is the second one - is this also a ladybird larvae, please?
Sunday shot
Wednesday shot
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

| | | Re: Ladybird larvae question The larvae looks like a harliquin ladybird, and i believe the pupa is too. If you look at the base of the pupa it looks like the spines are visible and there the same colour as on the larva. Im sure the resident ladybird expert will know for sure |

| | | Re: Ladybird larvae question Hi and thanks for that. I did wonder about the first shot being a harlequin because of the size of it
Thanks.

Size isn't that important (whatever I say elsewhere about imagines) with larvae because they go through several stages (instars), shedding their skins as they get bigger. However this is almost certainly Harmonia axyridis (cream streaked ladybird ( Harmonia axyridis) and eyed ladybird ( Anatis ocellata) also have this spikey appearance. When they shed their last larval skin it crumples up at the rear end giving this thorn-like appearance. So, yes, this is the 'harlequin' .... |

| | | Re: Ladybird larvae question I don't think Paul meant to type 'cream-streaked Harmonia axyridis' - should have been 'cream streaked Harmonia quadri something or other' (Can't remember if it's pustulata or maculata at this hour of the night!)

Reason: Realised I'd misunderstood Paul's message

henrya | Good interpretation - I've been on the retsina to support our lads in Athens! What I meant, as you cunningly noted, was Harmonia quadripunctata. Now I'm off to bed If I've got that wrong, I'll correct it tomorrow! | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
