| | | Unknown larva? I saw this on a willow leaf a few days ago - it looks like some kind of larva, but I don't know of what. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks. |

How hard is it to identify hoverflies from their larvae? (I suspect beyond my capabilities!). |

There is a guide - Graham Rotheray's Colour Guide to Hoverfly Larvae (Diptera, Syrphidae) in Britain and Europe, published by Dipterists Forum (as Dipterist's Digest No. 9).
It covers all types of UK hoverfly larvae (IE includes rat-tailed maggots), but not all to species, and often requires close examination (microscope).
