| | | Re: Honda Formula One Green 'Earth' Car I know what you mean - nothing wrong with that! Personally, I'd miss the occasional visit to the Mediterranean - there are more beetles there! Also, the weather is reliable but, as you say, so much to see and do nearer to hand. Have fun. Quote:

okay so trains are more efficient that planes (unless you want to go to america of course) but there is nothing particularly efficient about electrifying train lines - except that we could make the electricity from other tremendously green sources like ....ahh nuclear - any thoughts on where to put the waste , carbon netral doesnt equate exactly to green after all

I have just rung British Rail to get Tickets for my two sons to come and see me on 2nd April I was quoted if brought their tickets before 6pm the night before They had an offer on so it would cost me a total of £48 that was for the two of them from Plymouth to Chatham ( including Underground).
So I rang their dad right away and 10 mins after my call he went to get the Tickets... To be told that offer had been out for last 10 weeks and had sold out!!!! the Price now would be £200!!
It will cost £40 return by Coach + train fare from Victoria to here £32.50 or I could do a 10 hour (round trip) 600 miles in my car!!
They dont encourage you at all to use Public transport. There is no Incentive at all |

well done to honda for at least showing they are aware of the issues

| | | Re: Honda Formula One Green 'Earth' Car Tell me about it! Midland Mainline is one of the better operators but even then you still get about twenty different ticket options for the journey: ranging from £10 to £525 (really!) for Sheffield to London! A year back, four of us (including a couple on young persons' cards) got to London and back, with LT ticket, for £42. Picked two of my young grandaughters up to bring back, one way = £25 - each!
There's no logic to it.
A major problem is that you have to make different arrangements for different operators but even so there seems to be no operating logic to this: you can get cheap tickets on trains that are filled to bursting but have to pay a small fortune to get on ones which are half empty.
John Major has a lot to answer for!
One day, they'll get railway people and consumers involved rather than letting chartered accountants run the railways. But I'm not bitter .. ... well, maybe ... why don't they just go to other European countries to see how things are done efficiently and cheaply? Quote:

I put my son on a coach ( National Express in Northampton the other week for a three hour journey to Sheffield at 1115 hrs (80 miles?). He arrived at 1830 .... Okay, it wasn't all the 'bus company's fault (road works near Mansfield) but I've never been on a train delayed that long!
And I have other horror tales of coaches - especially the eight hour Megabus journey up the M1 (150ish miles!). And then when I was in Greece with the sleeping driver ... or the one who took his hands of the wheel to genuflect everytime he went round a corner .... but that was fun ; sitting on the M1 for hours can be nobody's idea of interesting!

| My sons journey on a coach will take 5 and half hours, then 45 mins on a train to here, but i am afraid they will have to do it as I have been on the sick for 2 years ,I would have to save for several months to be able to afford the train fare.Thats if i was willing to pay it..Why have these offers but only have a limited amount available/
A lot of people dont know 10 weeks in advance they are going to be travelling any where!!!
My sons dont mind the time on the Coach if it means being able to spend the school holidays with me |

| | | Re: Honda Formula One Green 'Earth' Car No, young people find ways of whiling away the hours - especially when they're going somewhere good!
I've spent days (and nights) travelling over Europe by coach when I was a lad and found it interesting, 'fun' at times. No way now! And yes, rail travel is quite cheap if you can book it in advance ... seldom a big problem for me now but I much preferred the days when you could just go to a station and get the next train ....
One day, someone will sort out the system Hopefully.
Anyway, hope the lads will have a good time with you - certainly ought to! Quote:
