I seem to remember that the bumper of the average 4x4 is above the level of the floor pan of a "normal" car which relies on this for strength in event of a collision with another "normal" car the 4x4 (being higher) totally destroys the normal vehicle

| | | Re: Parking Fees for 4x4's ok if your gonna bring performance cars into this then let me just make a few points about that. From what I can tell there are a lot less of them around than 4x4s and they don't take up more space when parked, they are more aerodynamic. They won't smash into your face if you got hit by one and I don't think they give the driver a false sense of security. I would guess that if your the driver of a proper status symbol then you would be careful when driving it :P |

Why do you need to use one in town? | Completely agree Paul, they are also a danger to other drivers in a accident
and the people who drive these things always seem to tailgate you if you stick to the speed limit in a 30

| | | Re: Parking Fees for 4x4's I have a Honda CR-V. It does about 42mpg on average, is shorter than the thirsty estate car it replaced, is a handy shape for what I need, and much easier for me to get in and out of. Like many "4x4" cars, it's 2 wheel drive unless the front wheels slip.
Plenty of 2WD cars use more gas and take up more space. I believe there is/was a 4WD Fiat Panda.
If you just want to object to something based on prejudice and have a silly rant, nobody who matters will take any notice of you. |

| | | Re: Parking Fees for 4x4's My next vehicle will be either a Honda CR-v or a Toyota rav4 ..... it won't neccessarily be 4 wheel drive (depends what model is available but they can be had has 2wd) ....
At present I have my late fathers Toyota corolla (X-reg) and my husband has my old Ford Fiesta (P reg). Neither of these vehicles are suitable for the gear and people I now carry and the places I visit ....... I need a 'taller' vehicle with more substantial springing, more room and not so low or cramped that older folks struggle to get in and out and tall folks don't have their knees under their throats |

| | | Re: Parking Fees for 4x4's My 4X4 is no wider than my other two cars. The fuel consumption is far worse but while I'm driving it, I'm saving fuel by not driving the other two.
Because there's no room in the drive for it I have to park it on the verge in front of my house. The ruts have become pretty deep and I've just bought four BF Goodrich Mud Terrain tyres to cope with the mud.
If you're considering buying a 4X4 get one with a tow bar. it doesn't matter if you don't want to tow anything, they're useful in the supermarket car park when the mothers and baby wide bays are full. By the way, have you noticed how many mothers leave their kids in the car and park in these places while they nip in to by the gin?
Being quite a long vehicle it's difficult to gauge the proximity of the car behind. That's where the tow bar comes in useful. Most cars have flexible front bumpers anyway.
I use the 4X4 regularly each year to get the Christmas Tree. This year the Forestry Commission left the plantation gate unlocked and I was able to help myself. I always take the old one back to the country and leave it to rot in a layby. I think that's much more environmentaly friendly than cutting it up and stuffing it in the wheely bin.
Thank you all for pointing out the errors of owning a 4x4. |
