| | | Loss of Greenland Ice Doubled The loss of ice from Greenland doubled between 1996 and 2005, as its
glaciers flowed faster into the ocean in response to a generally warmer
climate, according to a NASA/University of Kansas study being published
Friday. The study concludes the changes to Greenland's glaciers in the
past decade are widespread, large and sustained over time. They are
progressively affecting the entire ice sheet and increasing its
contribution to global sea level rise. Spaceflight Now | Breaking News | Greenland ice loss doubles in past decade, NASA says
This really gets to me, we are looking at a situation that may ruin thw whole planet doing who knows what damage to the environment, planet and society but yet the short sighted pollies would rather appease the groups of coal and the oil for very short term economic gain. What are we doing? It shows no signs of stopping. This is the biggest thing we are facing now "global warming". As most astronomers have to do is look at venus and its atmopshere, even though its been a runaway greenhouse effect for years. Sea levels are already rising, weather patterns are changing (wheres the worse winter!?) Getting warmer!) Its happening look at the polar ice caps on satellite images and you will see global warming is taking place. Life began on Earth at least 4 billion years ago, possibly beside hot underwater springs. It has been suggested, as past of the 'Gaia hypothesis', that life acts as a regulator on the Earth's temperature, keeping it within tolerable limits bu adjusting the balance of gases in the atmospere. However, there are growing signs of a human-induced global warming upsetting any natural balance by industrial and agricultural release of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane. The carbon dioxide missions we use are not going to stop and therefore global warming wont. |

| | | Re: Loss of Greenland Ice Doubled Back in the '80s, the Greenland Ice sheet was loosing 17 cubic miles of ice per year, now we are seeing losses of in the region of 40 - 45 cubic miles, that's a lot of fresh water pouring into the northern oceans dropping the salinity of the sea water & thereby slowing down the Gulf Stream/THC even further. Good old positive feedback Hopefully I'll get a decent winter soon, maybe not this year but it will happen in the next few years

Our politicians, who are going to save the planet single handedly have just given the go ahead for another runway at Heathrow and Stanstead to cope with the increase in air traffic, which is the biggest producer of greenhouse gas there is,why? Business & money. So It is pointless worrying about it or letting them make you feel guilty when you get in your car for a drive into the countryside. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
