The only thing the man in the street can do that will stop airport expansion (other than fuel shortage which will hasppen eventually) is consumer pressure - if enough people care about the issue and pledge to boycott heathrow if the runway is built then they wont do it - the hard part is getting people en masse to care - its a far fetched idea but it can work - after all it was consumer pressure that got CFCs taken out of aerosols.

edit : although actually the coalition is scrapping the scheme anyway - but that will be to do with cost cutting, not a victory for those buying tiny bits of land.

Heres hoping they scrap the london to birmingham TGV idea as well
