I don't understand the problem. Someone's prepared to inject a large amount of cash into looking for greener fuels. Fuels that other companies might also then use and further help the environment. A project that other companies might see gets him more profits because you may chose to use him over a less green company so they follow suit. So what if he profits from it? So what if it's good PR? So what if he registers the patents? Who cares? The fact is that this will benefit the environment. Bigger picture.
If you want more, petition the government to pass a law stating that any company producing more than x amount of pollution has to give y amount of money on an increasing sliding scale dependant on the pollution they create to green projects to reduce their carbon footprint.
Richard Branson isn't the monster here - no-one would have singled him out if he'd have done nothing, he'd just have been one of many but at least he's chosen to do something.
