Fantastic response, thanks to everyone who left feedback.
The product I’m designing isn’t being designed for the serious climbers etc, I too believe that it wouldn’t be sturdy enough. I want to market it for the tourist who doesn’t want to pay the ridiculous transport and hotel charges, that travelling (definitely within the UK) bring. I’m a keen traveller and yet I haven’t seen much of the UK in terms of the vast country side. I’m also love mountain biking and my idea stemmed from the ability to grab a bike and a bag and set off with the freedom to go anywhere. I can then spend my well earned money on the finer things (food and wine)
I want the bag to act like a parachute (kinda) with the main tent compartment being able to get zipped away. Then I want and outer compartment made from hard wearing (more rucksack) material. The articles would stay within the compartment and not be affected by the tent compartment, (apart from a zip to access it from the inside)
I must admit I am only just getting to the design context and that is why any feedback will generate possible ideas.
Thanks again for your support.

I have to say i'm still not seeing the niche or the USP - how does the ability to grab the bag (which you still have to pack the rest of your kit in) and go - differ from the ability to grab a standard bag, pack a one man tent or bivy and go ?

| | | Re: Feedback really welcome for BEng project I’ve pondered on this one for a couple of days thinking there is a way to do this.
Here's the answer.
If you use a large army burgan type bag then you could build the tent into the top compartment giving you plenty of space in the main compartment for all your personal belongings as well as the tent poles, ropes, pegs etc. You would have to design the tent so that when it is up you have the burgan inside to make it accessible to your belongings.
Another idea is to make a two man tent building the tent into the main compartment and using the large side compartments and the top one to keep all your belongings in. This would be ideal when back packing with a friend who could maybe carry some of your gear in another non converted burgan.
One final idea would be to build the tent into one of the large side compartments that can be zipped off. This sounds more feasible as the rest of the burgan is still left in tact and you can leave the tent in on site and wander off with the main bag.
Personally I still think it would be easier to strap a tent onto the top of your rucksack or to a pannier bag on the side of a bike.
Just remember where you got this idea when you have persuaded the dragons to take you up on it.
