Maybe some global warming is down to us and some to the natural climate cycles that occur throughout history. If all of us consume less of whatever it is we consume and waste less then that is a step, but the main culprits need to be addressed ie the super rich with private planes etc, celeb culture and big companies out to make a stash, people who make ridiculous amounts of money in the City of London, along with politicians and governments who want to keep their jobs and want to make lots of money too and are scared of making unpopular steps like penalising motorists and air travellers. So they plant biofuel in Mexico where the better off are fewer and take land from food production. Anyone living a life consuming mountains of resources should not be admired, but many work for this reason to have lots of goodies. Governments need to help and reward lower impact living by their policies.
Jared Diamond, Californian scientist, wrote a book called "Collapse" in which he describes how humans have managed to destroy their environments since the beginning of time. There will always be someone who wants to cut down the last tree for his dinner table or make the biggest statue as on Easter Island. Luckily in the past when cities disappeared because of climate change or environmental degradation, people moved somewhere else. Perhaps we should be looking for the next planet? |

I think I was fairly justified given the aggressive undertone of your response to my posting. I haven't seen any of your scientific input on this discussion since insinuating that the majority of people here don't know what's going on with this issue. Please, when you get the chance, enlighten us with your obvious command on this situation. We'd all love to hear the wisdom of and expert. I know you are really very busy so any minute you can spare would obviously be highly welcomed......
Cheers,

| | | Re: When Will Global Warming End? Just a thought, but as you wildlife photographers are sitting in your hides waiting for the first viewing of the Australian Marsupial Duck, have a good look around you. The hide that you are sitting in. The photographic equipment that you are using. The bags that you are carring your equipment in. What effect has this had on global warming?
Your equipment has to be flown in from China after being produced in a Chinese factory. The polystyrene packaging with a half life of a hundred million years. The plastic bags. The cardboard boxes. The instruction manuals printed in 250 different languages. The plastic covered cables. The CD ROMs containing the drivers and manuals. It all takes energy and world resources.
The outcome of all of this is a load of poor quality images which require manipulating in PhotoShop on your computer, which was flown in from China after being produced in a Chinese factory................ It goes on and on, doesn't it. I haven't mentioned how you arrive at the site in your Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Russian or European car.
Who are we to complain about global warming? We are just as bad as anyone else.
Swap your cameras for sketch books and charcoal (from sustainable sources) and save the world! |

| | | Re: When Will Global Warming End? Hit the nail on the head with that one Interpreter. Where does it end though? Every job when disected can be shown to highlight negativity in the required production process to supply the respective 'tools of the trade'. Every packaging company for every product that needs packaging can be blamed for their contribution to the ongoing problem. What is the answer? I personally don't know, I really don't. I'm not going to make any theoretical situations or submit any ideas for courses of actions through fear of getting lambasted again. Everyone is to blame in some way or another. Its the way our society has evolved. Production of paper and plastics along with other everyday and accepted items each contribute to the problems at hand.
How do we stop it, slow it down or reverse the effects of our actions? Any ideas?......

Cheers,
Mark. | My Mother used to take me shopping at Burtons. There were sides of smoked bacon hanging from the ceiling and everything else appeared to be stored in barrels. Nothing was prepacked; everyone was served personally. Butter was in a barrel and the man behind the counter would scoop up a guesstimated amount and weigh it. Usually spot on. The butter was then patted into shape with two wooden paddles and wrapped in a sheet of grease-proof paper before being handed over to the customer. Sugar was scooped out of the barrel and weighed into a brown paper bag. Eventually all of the purchases were given to the customer, who placed them into her wicker basket. If she didn't have a wicker basket, she would be given a brown paper carrier bag.
Eggs were sold by the dozen (or sometimes individually to the old folk) and were also put into brown paper bags. Bacon came in 'sides' and was cut into slices using a bacon slicer. This was wrapped in a sheet of grease-proof paper and placed in a white paper bag. Coffee was ground to order.
In the house, bread was kept in a bread bin and if not eaten went stale. It then went into bread and butter pudding or especially for the kids, was cut into 'soldiers' and soaked in a cocoa and sugar mixture and baked. Today bread is kept in the 'fridge and turns green if left uneaten. Meat was kept in a meat safe. Rabbits were caught locally. Now they come from China. Most produce was either local or Commonwealth produced. The exotic fruits of today were unheard of then.
Teachers came to school on the 'bus. Children did the same or walked. It was safe to walk and play outside then.
Of course, we also had the pea-souper fogs which lasted for days. Polio and rickets were about, as was TB. It cost a shilling to see the doctor. The district nurse had a bicycle. So did the policemen.
Was life any better then? I don't know. As I remember it it seemed much better. However my Grandfather, who was a Master Plasterer, had two days off per year. Christmas Day and Good Friday. If he didn't work, there was no food on the table. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
