Their argument is that storing lots of cardboard is a fire hazard - on the other hand, if they had people distributing the boxes at the check-outs they wouldn't be storing it for very long!

In the dim and distant past (20 years ago or so) I seem to recall all the supermarkets I knew had large piles of cardboard boxes available behind the checkouts for customers to use as they wish. Similarly (until the local supermarket forced it to close) the local greengrocer recently did exactly the same thing. Now for whatever reason the supermarkets seem have taken to throwing all their reusable cardboard away and handing out plastic that isn't reusable. Which isn't green and presumably costs them money. The only reason I can imagine is that they have decided the floor space taken up by a pile of cardboard boxes is more valuable to them as sales space.

I've never been in a McDonalds (I lie - I was desperate one Sunday morning and used their toilet but I don't think that counts) nor, until this month, a Little Chef. However I've twice had coffee in the L.C. now and was intrigued and heartened to read that their greasy breakfast was now 'free range' - since they show eggs, bacon and sausage on the advert then we could assume that lots of pigs and hens are much happier nowadays? ... for a while, at least

PS: the coffee wasn't very good and they were promoting a Nescafe latte ....
