| | | Re: Supermarket trolleys in rivers/canals Just resurrecting this thread to say, success! The EA getting involved seems to have done the trick. A sign went up in store a few days ago to say "Trolley Good Idea" and then explain coin-release trolleys would be installed at the beginning of March. Just in time for the water vole breeding season. |

| | | Re: Supermarket trolleys in rivers/canals There was a report in the paper about it saying the store had decided that the abandoned trolleys looked a mess around the town and they were sorting them for that reason. No mention of the EA or the voles at all. But I think privately that the EA's intervention had everything to do with the decision.
Yes, let's hope it's a precedent. |

| | | Re: Supermarket trolleys in rivers/canals Congratulations! The little battles are so important in environmental issues, it's great to hear of success stories. Hopefully, they'll all eventually add up to a general shift in attitudes to the way we treat the environment.

| | | Re: Supermarket trolleys in rivers/canals As is my way I was walking another small stream near where I live in Tewkesbury, the stream in question is the Swillgate, and in the summer of 2007 as a raging torrent that contributed to our famous floods. i was looking for any sign of live in the stream, none was apparent save for a new brood of Mallard duck c/w with attentive mother and a couple of young lads throwing heavy bricks and such at a semi submerged supermarket trolley.
I suggested they stop doing that, and instead take a look at the Mallard chicks, they did and seemed impressed by the sight of these little balls of fluff. I never heard another splash. the trolley? I will remove with waders on ... I promise vole-woman |

| | | Re: Supermarket trolleys in rivers/canals Cool! And well done for talking to the lads. I often get asked by teens and kids what I'm looking for as I stand on the bridge; almost without exception they listen and ask sensible questions before moving on. Just twice in two and a half years I've been hassled. Mostly even the scariest looking youths are interested, if only for a minute or so. |
