why was the workers attacking the queen ant?

Is this a winged queen? If so they could be males trying to mate with her.

They help the queen remove her wings after her nuptial flight.
The other point worth considering, of course, is that the the two sets of ants belong to different species so the workers are defending their own territpry against an invader?
