| | | Re: Stop the Badger cull I tried to sign the petition but it is one I have signed before. Secret World - Wildlife Rescue did a very good spot on TV a while ago (its where I take my Bats) they were being overwhelmed by orphaned Badgers cubs. If you are looking for a charity to support then this is the one Secret World - Wildlife Rescue
I seem to remember there is an open day soon

| | | Re: Stop the Badger cull with all respect to the farmers and knowing it is their livelihood that suffers when cattle are infected you have to see it from our side of the fence
what if the government turned round and said if one cow was found effected within a herd then the whole herd needs to be slaughtered regardless of whether the rest tested negative or not. what would be the farmers response ?
the same response as us when you decided that shooting all badgers regardless of there health status is expectable
you have to only look at the figures in Dorset 80% of badgers trapped were free from TB of the other 20% only a very small number were proved to be infectious
with only around 1 percent of cattle effected by TB in Dorset which too is made up of intensive dairy farms and of course plenty of badgers
as i said before and will say again the hotspot in the south west that has persisted since the sixty's is due to climate and with the increasing pressure of intensive farming thats why there is a higher infection rate than elsewhere not because of the badgers |

| | | Re: Stop the Badger cull 38 Degrees | Blog
38 degrees are deciding whether to campaign against the badger cull, you can let them know your opinion, but runs out tomorrow Sunday.
And for anyone wanting to keep up with developments go to Twitter Twittersearch #badgercull - contributors include Chris Packham, Gareth Enticott (bovine TB scientist and vet), farming paper people, RSPCA, wildlife trusts and a group of English beef farmers called badgerfriendlyfarms @Badger_Friendly (they have a mission statement against a badger cull). |

| | | Re: Stop the Badger cull I heard the Farming today programme this morning ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b012ql53) and it is a discussion about the cull that was very interesting. Well worth a listen, if you have the time.
You can also download the programme as a podcast http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/farming

| | | Re: Stop the Badger cull I don't understand why the govt. doesn't read it's own stats. DEFRA stated in 2005 that for every £1 of benefit for the farmer, the taxpayer paid £2317. Why don't we just fund vaccination and be done?
In 2007, DEFRA found that in addition to the feral badger reservoir, bTB was also found in deer, mice, otters, foxes, rats and moles. Are we going to cull these species too?
The only time rates of TB consistently reduced was during WW2 when farmers double fenced hedgerows to prevent cows eating lush grass around badger latrines.
Evidence produced by DEFRA (2007), consistently highlighted lack of biosecurity measures and poor husbandry practices as transmission routes.
Spend the money on educating farmers and improving a vaccine, not eradicating yet another species. |
