I feel that HS2 will be a bit of a millstone around our necks!
Off the 'Top of my head' , I can offer overspends on, ( and in no particular order ), ..........................
Trident
2012 Olympics
Every Motorway
Channel Tunnel
Most Airports
HNS
Common Market
Iraq
Falklands
Thames Barrier
I'm probably wrong on some, but I'll stand by my figures, ( as there's probably more !!).
I don't want to travel to London in a record time. I'd love to go at a slower pace, and see the views!
But I don't have a say in the matter, they're going to use my money and make it happen.
This is unfair, but if it brings a government down, then OK! But I think that the other party started it!!! Do we vote UKIP or the GREENS ??
What ever Government project has kept to budget and been of benefit to Joe Public?
But most of all, LEAVE OUR WILDLIFE ALONE !! We ( the Government), is constantly chipping away at wildlife habitat; they claim to be sympathetic, this is WRONG. They are conning us, and bit by bit the countryside looses out. I don't know how to advise people to vote in the next election, but I'll have none of them. It's unfair and uneccessary.
Rant over !

| | | Re: Stop high speed 2! I've googled using every search criteria and key word I can think of and found no reference to the present governments intentions regarding HS2.
However I did find a list of more recent government commitments to improving the rail network. If you take a look at the projected cost involved I think you'll agree that the financial reality of the HS2 project will make it a none starter for many governments yet to come regardless of party politics. Infact I predict the NIMBYs in the proposed area will be winging about new housing development long before the money becomes available for a new railway. Government unveils rail investment package : Directgov - Newsroom
The population will continue to expand and put an increasingly high premium on development land, making our present commuter based transport infrastructure non-viable, forcing a move to a village type community structure with most people working at
or close to home.
The inevitable population increase will result in more pressure on the natural environment than any long distance railway or motor way could cause.
Instead of the local NIMBY outlook we need to get our heads into gear on the national prospect now. Population expansion is inevitable but one thing we can all do now is plan ahead.
If every new housing project large or small was surrounded by,at least a small area of green registered common land, each connected by a green trackway and planted with trees and shrubs, then at least we will preserve some of our natural heritage. If your own pleasure in nature is all your interested in then fine carry on. But if you care what your grand kids and their grand children are going to inherit then there's no time like the present to start planning head. |

Great Idea. Couldn't come soon enough! | Martin, it seems as though you are seriously missing the point...
They won't be on the train and they won't be on the M40 either because they won't be travelling on business. Hence it's a white elephant.

Dave P. | So you're telling me that the impoverished bankers and all the others with expense accounts are going to give up their free lunches and the minibar to stay at home on the internet? I don't think so.
Those on the motorways today and their successors, (if it means more time to be pampered at the expense of someone else) will be on the train. |

Yes indeed, he and his cronies were deeply involved with the construction industry (as well as the oil companies &c). Th beginning of the end for the country as we knew it! |

That would be my only concern about HS2, who's going to get rich at the taxpayers expense this time? |

Th beginning of the end for the country as we knew it! | The "beginning of the end of the country as we knew it" was the rise of the motor car, when people discovered that they could travel where and when they wanted, and therefore stopped using the railways, making many lines and services uneconomic.
