Following the tragic pollution of the River Trent, which has wiped out much of its wildlife, it is time the Prime Minister introduced serious penalties for these incidents. In a recent case,
Severn Trent, with turnover of £1.55 billion and profits of £470 million was fined £6,700 for a sewage pollution. This is not a deterrent penalty to polluters but an acceptable cost

I've signed too, although I think there is an important point missing from the petition, namely that the cost of serious fines must be born by the company's shareholders and not passed on to its customers through higher bills.

Just signed, Dave has hit on a good point though. How many people will think that any fine levied will ultimately be passed on to customers through higher bills and just not bother?

can we put this into context please?
the whole of the River Trent has lost its wildlife??????
and as for the Prime Minister doing anything for the benefit of wildlife or mankind is clearly out of the question.

Edit: I've just done the math - it's equivalent to fining me 24p so I wasn't far out with my initial guess.
