Vince | cheers stig , its always the same , when a debate cant be "won" (in so much as you can win a debate - personally i dont see it as a contest) by logic, reason , or evidence some people will always lower the tone by turning to personal insults - why anyone would think that this benefits their argument i dont know but there it is
Tempting though it is to reply in kind , i'm bigger than that so Ive just reported the abuse and put DB on my ignore list so i cant see his posts.

This thread came to mind. I thought to myself that I am indeed lucky that I can afford to view sightings like this as a joy,
We should all try and see the two sides of this coin.
I cannot find good reason why anyone should enjoy killing an animal but I have to concede that some must be culled. Hunting with hounds is obviously detrimental for the individual fox but for the fox population? I’m afraid I think the ban has probably done more harm than good.
Just waiting for the backlash from one side or the other on this, but hey-ho like I have said it’s just my urban two pence worth!
Vince | you'll get no backlash from me stig - everyone is entitled to their opinion
I have never taken any enjoyment in killing anything , i just view it as a grim nececesity that is occasional necessary for the purposes of conservation and as I said higher up I would rather it were done by someone like myself who will make sure its humane and swift than risk it being done by someone that doesnt care
(I'm talking about culling with a rifle - I have never ridden to hounds and never would as i dont think it is necessary or eficient for foxes (the exmoor deerhunt may be a little different)

2. I don't want anyone on my land with a high powered rifle.
3. Marksman or not, I have small relatives and public footpaths crossing my land.
I can see the headlines in the West Somerset Free Press now !! | I can see your point to an extent - but hikers etc go into the scottish highlands (with children) and are not regularly shot by the stalkers - and no one would be shooting across a footpath anyway as such is contrary to the fireams act.
Also i'm a little confused when you say you dont want anyone on your land with a deer rifle - How do the hunt despatch the deer when it is cornered ? , I had assumed it would be shot at bay - but i obvously dont have your degree of experience ( i have hunted deer - but never on horse back with dogs , only on foot in woodlands with either a .338 or a shotgun )

I dont support the idea of hunting with dogs or indeed hunting by any means purely for sport - but i do support the idea of hunting by any humane means for the management of a population or predator control to protect rare species, to protect legitimate livivelyhoods, or for food - strikes me that the best way ahead would be to repeal the current HWD act and start again with a licensing system. | What's wrong with hunting? To me its just townies trying to tell us what to do.

| | | Re: Enforce the Hunting Ban Yes: the majority of rural swellers want the ban retaining. Four in five rural voters want to keep hunt ban "JUST one in five people living in rural areas want to see the hunting ban scrapped, new research suggests…76 per cent of people surveyed think hunting with dogs is cruel and 59 per cent of voters would be less likely to back a would-be MP if they found out they supported hunts.
But the poll suggests support for hunting is low even among Conservative ranks, with only 33 per cent supporting it. Of Labour supporters, just 13 per cent think it should be legalised again while among Lib-Dems, it is 19 per cent. And of rural voters, just 22 per cent support repealing the Act, compared to 23 per cent of those living in the suburbs and 14 per cent in urban areas." | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
