| | | Re: Include the Western Weald in the South Downs National Park I've already signed lots of petitions for it - I live in the area...well not for much longer but.... Yeah, it is well worth signing to make sure this beautiful area comes under the protection of a National Park. |

| | | Re: Include the Western Weald in the South Downs National Park No, not another beaurocratic mess. National parks are the worst thing that can happen to an area, especially for those living within the boundaries.
Better an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. |

| | | Re: Include the Western Weald in the South Downs National Park Ok, so not everyone agrees. The thing is - if the Western Weald does not qualify for National Park status, then it could by default lose it`s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty protection. What we want is a wider National Park to include the weald. So please sign the petition, then the whole south downs area & the weald could have the highest level of protection so that our wildlife can thrive in peace and all those who enjoy the countryside, can do so without threat of development!

| | | Re: Include the Western Weald in the South Downs National Park It's just a name for the area that lies between the North and South Downs. I'm not sure but I think Weald is the Saxon word for wood..I should know i've been told enough times by my Regia friends (Dark Ages re-enactment group). |

By the way I'm a Scot and I know we have some weird names but - what is a "weald" | The weald is the bit between the two sets of downs (north and south) - I believe it comes from the saxon for fertile valley bottom. - much like "wold" which you find in other areas.
the same word can be found meaning "forest" or "wild country" but a "forest" would not necessarily be wooded as that comes from a norman word meaning "a hunting preserve" as in deer forest
