Whilst searching I've found lots of references as to why milk is bad for hedehogs though... | as i mentioned on another thread, i met pat morris (quoted extensively above as being pro milk) at a natural history society meeting where he was giving a talk and asked him about this.
he says that his work is being misquoted out of context, and that his findings only support the idea that hedge hogs drink a lot of milk , not that it is good good for them - he says that his view is that it is better to feed milk than feed nothing, but it is better to feed water and meat than it is to feed milk.
he also said that if you feel you really must feed milk it is better to feed goats milk or complan formula than it is to feed cows milk.

Still plenty around Lancashire, at my friends home there have been two lots of youngsters - the last lot of three hoglets had to been caught and taken to the local rescue as they would not have made it through the winter, she did not know she had hedgehogs - just thought her cat had a very healthy appetite - she feeds him in the porch and two years ago found an adult hedgehog eating there, since then she puts extra out for them in spring and summer and the young have been coming with the adults.
As to feeding them I have to agree cat or dog food and water.

| | | Re: Where have all the hedgehogs gone? If what I have on the front garden is hedgehog poo it looks like they have all taken up residence here with me!! I have a pile of old concrete blocks out the front along with a good bit of tree prunings and the top of the blocks and other areas are covered in what I have been told(by my good friends on WAB) is HH poo. I hadnt realised that hogs climb but they certainly do here. I am looking forward to the spring when they come out and about again. I have seen no other signs of them.. and dont feed them.

| | | Re: Where have all the hedgehogs gone? On the subject of chogs, haven't seen many in recent years but did see one trying to cross the road into Campbeltown the other day. The wif insisted I stop the charabanc so that she could get out and put it back into the garden of an adjacent hotel.
That being said, I've got my infrared webcam now so it'll be interesting to see what's visiting our garden after dark. |

| | | Re: Where have all the hedgehogs gone? Up to a couple of weeks ago we had a 4 lb big boy which used to come for his evening bowl of dog food every night. He was always very timid, but we haven't seen him for some days. Hope he isn't road pizza ! ! ! And I've gone and made a hedgehog box for him as well! ! ! Cheers, Tony. |

Anyway, I don't know much about the hedgehog decline, all I know is that they are extremely rare around here. I've only ever seen one in my life and it was dead, presumably run over. Then again, living in a flat might make me less prone to spotting one but still I go out a lot so they may be very scarce around here, no point even going out searching for one as it's usually futile.

I do some volunteer job with a mammal group. I am introducing data about number of mammals killed on roads over all UK. Hedgehogs are among the first 3rd since I see. Lot of rabbits and squirrels too. |

| | | Re: Where have all the hedgehogs gone? Hello everyone- I live in Nottinghamshire, I have had two hedgehog's
in my garden all summer. I have a "posh" hedgehog house at the bottom
of the garden which my husband made them, but no sign of them
hibernating in it. I think that they have gone next door, to hibernate
"naturally" in a big old log pile which my neighbour has. I do not mind
as long as they are safe !- Sue B | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
