Defra have launched a consultation on options to protect marine biodiversity in Lyme Bay (off the soth coast of Devon & Dorset) from the impacts of fishing with dredges and other towed gear.
The 3 options presented are: A. 12 sq mile closed area; B. 25 sq mile closed area and C. 60 square mile closed area (the area The Wildlife Trusts were calling for last year).
You can download the consultation at:
Defra, UK - Consultations - Consultation on measures to protect marine biodiversity interests in lyme bay from the impact of fishing with dredges and other towed gear. This is not just a local issue. If the Government can be persuaded to take a strong stance in Lyme Bay, it will blaze a trail for stronger marine conservation measures around the UK. It’s a vital test-case in advance of the Marine Bill. The consultation closes on 7 December.
Devon & Dorset Wildlife Trusts and The Wildlife Trusts nationally are together campaigning for the Government to close 60 sq miles (less than 10% of Lyme Bay), which would protect most of the vulnerable reef areas. The campaign includes a report (coming soon) on the findings of Devon WT’s 16 years’ work in Lyme Bay, a co-ordinated programme of media activity, postcards to the Secretary of State for members of the public to sign, a letter-writing campaign and a web-based petition:see home page of
