Petition Against Save Songbirds

Save Songbirds

Saw this website after seeing a sticker in a car window basically saying "kill big birds" - I can't remember exactly which bird it stated, it may have been a sparrowhawk - it annoyed me quite a lot at the time (12 months or so ago), and I did complain to them about it, especially as I pointed out that the majority of songbird death doesn't appear to be raptor related (a brief search on the net - maybe the RSPB website itself - gave me a load of info, which they ignored squirrels, lack of hedges, etc., being more responsible.).

So, my petition would be against these people.... they should know better.

Re: Petition Against Save Songbirds

Good for you ,always read EXACTLY what a petition supports and QUESTION its information /motives, not all of them see (or acknowledge) the bigger picture.

Re: Petition Against Save Songbirds

I don't think anyone takes these people seriously and have read previously that it is game birds that most of these people want to save so they can shoot them and charge sky high prices for others to shoot them. Legalising the persecution of raptors seems to be their main aim. The more these morons are ignored the better. It does not take a genius to work out that if the birds of prey wiped out the songbirds they would soon become extinct due to food shortages unless of course they succumbed to obesity.

There is an address on the form when you click 'Click here to join SOS'. Not that I joined, I hasten to add, I just had a look after reading your post.

Re: Petition Against Save Songbirds

I would recomend that the link -Save Our Songbirds - is read. Make your own decision but to me Its a blatent thinly wraped attempt by the estate at Langholm to keep the grouse numbers up.

Although initially song birds are mentioned, 80% of the Latest News (which is 5 years old) consists of a letter from Brian Mitchell (who has had letters printed in the shooting times) the now part time manager of the hill who blames raptors for the demise of grouse chick survival and therefore relocation of his gamekeepers to other posts on the estates.

He admits that the estate used to cull each year 200 adult foxes 300 carrion crow, Stoat, Weasel, Mink etc. (They seem to be forming their own eco system)

This man also claims that countrywide the Sparrrow Hawk alone takes 4,300 TONS of small birds each year ( how heavy is a blue tit) and the 28 Harriers on his moor kill 111,006 small birds each year, these numbers were provided to him by a by a 'scientist'.

Honestly guys stop hiding behind song bids and be honest.

Lets take a heavy starling instead, eh?

4300 tons = 4,300,000Kg
1 heavy starling = 0.085 Kg
4,300,000kg of starling = 50,588,235 individuals. Per year.

or

138,597 per day

or

5774 per hour

or

96 per minute.

That's a lot of budgie!

I take it they mean that's the whole intake of the sparrowhawk population of the world?!!

yikes what are these? Elephant sized flightless monster sub-species of harriers? As for the sparrowhawks there must be an impressive flock in the most highly productive forest in the world - amazing stuff

something tells me these figures arn't in a peer reviewed publication lol

Yes, indeed! Point well made, as is the rest of this thread!

We need birds more than we need loonies!

Re: Petition Against Save Songbirds

Apart from the other baloney, how can anyone promote culling the hen harrier. AAAhhgh

I see they claim to be a Scottish charity. Can this status be challenged in Scotland? Is there a Scottish equivalent of the Charity Commission?

Any scottish members prepared to take up the cudgels??

Re: Petition Against Save Songbirds

Do you really have to be Scottish? A Google search should reveal the organisation we need, they we all email them to point out that loonies have established a 'charity' whose aims include killing hen harriers, which is illegal.

I’ve just searched. I found this.

The Charity Commission is only responsible for registering charities in England in Wales. In Scotland, recognition of charitable status is a function of the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR):
OSCR
1st Floor
Argyll House
Marketgait
Dundee
DD1 1QP
Telephone 01382 220446
