Massacre of Birds in Spain

Hi guys

I wouldn't normally ask but we have a petition going around regarding the illegal trapping of birds in Spain that has a chance of being legalised over there. It is currently running on Birdforum and a few other sites as well.

I know we are a British forum but it would be short sighted if we thought that our birds wouldn't suffer a knock on effect from this style of trapping. But even if you thought it wouldn't I urge you to think globally on this occasion. What is being suggested is barbaric to say the least.

I have asked the mods if it is okay to place this request on the open forum and they, plus Stu, have agreed to let me do this.

Following is what is on the opening thread on Birdforum.

The Catalan government is trying to push forward legislation that would legalise the hunting of birds using glue, say SEO/BirdLife (BirdLife in Spain).

This cruel method is specifically banned by European law because it in non-selective and difficult to adequately control. In the name of "tradition", the hunters use sound recordings to attract birds, luring them to branches covered in glue.

Hundreds of thousands of thrushes migrating from northern Europe are thought to be at risk and will be killed in the Ebro area between October and November - that is unless the new legislations can be stopped.

In the same regulations, the Catalan government is trying also to legalise a form of net-trap hunting called 'filat', a technique which traps thirsty birds attracted to small pools of water. The technique is also forbidden in Spain, again because it is non-selective and thought difficult to control.

"The protection of nature is high on the agenda these days, but the Catalan government which is 'progressive and ecological', prefers to look back on methods of hunting that harms protected species," said a spokesperson from SEO/BirdLife (BirdLife in Spain).

Get involved: sign the petition to protect birds from illegal hunting practices in Spain on the following website: Do you want to see them like that?.

BirdLife International
Thursday 20th September 2007

Having read that, and hopefully signed the petition against this potential illegal trapping may I ask that you try and get this petition spread over any other forums you may be in, or even pass it around friends, workmates, anyone that you think would put their name to this petition. As you can see they are trying to bring it in now but if they miss it this time around they may well try next year.

We just can't stand by and let this barbaric act take place. Please sign the petition and state on this thread that you have done it. That way it will keep the thread active and keep it in the eye of those that may have missed it.

Thanks for your time and patience and a big thank you to those that care enough to read and sign this petition.

I would happily sign, if I knew how. I wish you the best of luck but I don't fancy your chances against a government that still sanctions bullfighting

Re: Petition against the possible massacre of Birds in Spain

Sorry about that. I don't know why the link didn't appear but never mind, here it is.
Do you want to see them like that?

We can't let apathy come into this. Just because the Spanish Government sanction bullfighting (which has been a tradition there for many years) doesn't mean that we can't alter the course of their thinking regarding the issue of bird trapping.

Please sign this petition and pass it on to as many of your internet connections that you can.

John

Re: Petition against the possible massacre of Birds in Spain

Thanks guys. It's much appreciated.

Try and push it around to as many people as possible if you can. As you can see, this is a particularly barbaric way of trapping birds and we must try and do something about it.

Re: Petition against the possible massacre of Birds in Spain

Please don't let this thread drop off the scale. There are over 6,000 members on this site. Surely we can muster up a lot more signatures from those members.

I see that there have been 165 views to this thread so far. I can't believe that over 140 of them haven't responded to this thread. How can anyone feel it is right for this practice to be allowed.

I'm sorry for trying to make people feel guilty but this is a very important petition that needs not just our attention, but every nature lovers attention throughout the world.

I think I will start a thread to catch peoples eyes to look at this thread as the title may be putting people off.

John

Re: Petition against the possible massacre of Birds in Spain

Although WAB is a UK forum, what happens in Europe and other parts of the world has a direct impact on our birds.

This is a sickening and barbaric practice.

I have willingly signed.

Well done to John for bring to the attention of WAB.
