Its not very nice granted - but they do have a point regarding the damage snares do - and to be fair to flower of edin i guess the link was to the article below.

if anyone wants to avoid the snare image this is the link they need to click on to go straight to the para jump page 07.05.23.html

perhaps a mod could edit the original post ?

Post Re: Sky-diving for eggs from caged hens ban

Right I'll say this here and then I'll start another thread for the Snares Petition. I'm sorry if this seems so vile, but it is in fact reality. AfA is known for telling it like it is which is why it is gaining in popularity. AfA doesn't do the snaring... they just take the photos so that they can shame the perpetrators and bring solid evidence to the notice of the Scottish Parliament. Please support them all you can....I'm a volunteer there because I want to be, I recognise their work and hope that I can be educated by them too. It's working.

The 4 are risking their lives in the name of caged hens on October 13th. Instead of criticising them and me, let's do all we can to support them shall we as chickens who can't stretch their wings and scratch in the ground are unhappy animals and they need our help. The photo of Hetty on the front page had.....me in it!

Re: Sky-diving for eggs from caged hens ban

I thought battery farming is already to be banned by 2012? with no new farms after 2009? Have I remembered it wrong?

Also alway post warnings if links lead to picks that might be distressing to some. It might be reality but so are car crashes and I think a person should be able to choose not to look.

I apologise for not posting a warning. However, if it's distressing to some, then why are they on the Internet? I sometimes feel sick when reading some of the things I have to during filing, but that doesn't make the reality go away, and that's why volunteering in this way is so important to me.

The situation is this. Our undercover investigator at AfA was doing his job when he noticed and exposed Glenrath Farms, who supply Tesco and Asda (in Scotland anyway), were breaching basic animal welfare regulations. Tesco and Asda have not yet given a firm commitment to stop supplying eggs from caged hens in the near future, and AfA wants them to.

See website for further details, and again I apologise for any graphic images you may find en route to the page needed

The other thing is that the EU wants to postpone the Ban for 2012. This must not happen. I was out with the CIWF last August as well, although I missed them this year in Glasgow as I didn't feel well in Stirling when Jo and friend were on tour, and I got sent home early!

Here is the link for the CIWF page too

CIWF - Tesco urged to Cage-free and I promise, no upsetting images en route to this page but clicking on the links found there might...

While they are to be commended and all that this is somewhat overstaing the case - if the jump is run propperly their lives will not be at risk - and if they are they shouldnt be jumping with that organiser.

I live 100yds from a supermarket but get my eggs delivered from a farm 3 miles away. The hens have complete freedom and the farmer doesn't charge for delivery. If only people would think about how their "cheap" supermarket eggs are produced. They probably don't realise that the eggs they're buying could already be ten days old, let alone the fact of how they were produced!

It IS a barbaric practice, and breaches of the rules in place must make it SO much worse for them. Time for Tesco and ASDA to wake up and smell the coffee and stop supporting Glenrath, I think.

Re: Sky-diving for eggs from caged hens ban

As a student I worked on a couple of changeover days on a battery farm and I have to say the birds are treated pretty appallingly. Each cage of about 24 inches long and 12 deep had 6 birds in each The birds that were taken out of the cages were virtually featherless, yanked out of the cages and sent to the local glue factory because they are only kept on the farm for about 1 month before being slaughtered. The new healthy birds were stuffed into the cages like large pillows into small cases. The heat and smell in the barn was overpowering with ammonia, you would not have been able to walk from one end to the other without gagging if it weren't for the face masks we wore.
One of the guys always took four old chickens home to roam his garden rather than be paid for the work.

Personally I choose to eat organic free range eggs because they taste better as the birds have generally been allowed to scratch around for their food naturally rather than being fed 'chemical corn' and as long as the egg isn't off I don't mind how old the egg is.

Cheers,

Adam

Re: Sky-diving for eggs from caged hens ban

Adam, thank you for your post. The regulations say there should only be 5 birds to a cage no bigger than an A4 sheet of paper and even that's horrible. Cages have been dicovered in Scotland with 6 or even 8 birds in them. Anyway, that aside, they jump tomorrow. I hope all goes well as they're all friends of mine.
