| | | Butterflies Well the butterflies think the spring is here. I've just seen a clouded yellow, I think, at some distance, and there is a peacock butterfly sunning himself on a piece of wood in the garden. Loads of things flying around, but I haven't been quick enough to I.D. them. My son saw a green moth or butterfly, but I missed it.

| | | Re: Butterflies I'd have thought it was a brimstone you saw this early in the year, but I wouldn't put money on it  Plenty of peacocks here, a few small tortoiseshells and zillions of these;
Bring on the rest of them!

| | | Re: Butterflies Yes it looks like it's going to be an excellent year for butterflies. It has been an unusually warm day today and while walking the dog this afternoon I spotted three Peacocks and a Small Tortoiseshell! Nicola.

Could it have been a male Brimstone?. This is the commonest yellow flutterby at this time of year when they wake up from hibernation |

| | | Re: Butterflies i am conducting a habitat study into british butterflies for my dissertation this involves many hours of transect walking and i didnt think i would have to start my study again til the end of march but i have already seen some tortoiseshells and a i would like to say that i saw a clouded yellow today as i was driving through my village but as it is way to early for them i would say it was a brimstone as they in adult form can be seen from as early as Jan.

Clouded Yellows are smaller, normally orange-yellow with black borders + mainly a migrant species, though in recent years has been able to overwinter on parts of the Dorset coast. Normally don't appear inland until at least May. |
