| | | Fritillary, but which one? Photographed this in a shallow pit at the Magpie lead mine in the White Peak area of Derbyshire.
I could do with some help on determining which sort of Fritillary this is. Any guidance gratefully received. |

I find these difficult to tell apart. We had a Silver Washed in our garden for the first time the other day and that was quite easy but I have no way of distinguishing a Dark Green from a High Brown (apart from the underwings, which I never seem to see).
Good to see Fritillaries inhabiting and old industrial site though! |

| | | Re: Fritillary, but which one? I don't find DGF and SWF that hard to separate. When you see them together in the same area you immediately see the differences. SWF noticeably bigger and more orange as it has less black markings on it. Less black bordering on SWF too. Also when they rest you can see the differences in the patterning. |

| | | Re: Fritillary, but which one? It is a dark green. This species is reasonably common in the limestone dales there, especially in Lathkill Dale which isn't far from the Magpie Mine.
I don't think the main confusion species, high brown, is found in the Peak (but could be wrong).

We walked up Lathkill Dale but the only butterflies we saw were Small Coppers. The most striking sighting for us was the Redstarts. In the 'screedy' bit we saw at least 6 at once. A lovely spot. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
