| | | Black and Red Butterfly ID needed I was out walking with a friend and saw a black butterfly feeding on some thistles and ragwort. About size of a red admiral or slightly bigger but it was not a red admiral or peacock. Its underwings were black and there was red (very dark red) on the upper wings and this was surrounded by black. It was quite flighty so didn't get a pic of it. It held it self like a butterfly with wings closed after it had been feeding for a few moments. Looked through books etc and can't see anything like it. Could only think it was an escaped exotic? |

| | | Re: Black and Red Butterfly ID needed No definately not cinnabar moth - I did check that as there are lots of catterpillars on the ragwort. Also it was too large for a cinnabar moth. Thanks though |

| | | Re: Black and Red Butterfly ID needed Also, have you considered a migrant such as a Camberwell Beauty? If you were in an eastern county at the time, this is more likely.

| | | Re: Black and Red Butterfly ID needed I had in that I looked through my books which include migrants but it may not be in there? Not a Camberwell Beauty - which would have been good! I'm in the West Midlands Deb. thanks |

When you do see them, especially if not close, it looks like a blackish butterfly with a pale edge. The original description doesn't sound like one to me.
Maybe some sort of Red Admiral aberration? |

| | | Re: Black and Red Butterfly ID needed Definitely not one! Could be but there was a lot of dark red on it - it was a really dark red and quite sort of velvety looking - almost a black red if there is such a thing and surrounded by black. So maybe you're right Aeshna??? Thanks |
