I'm confused by this one. It clearly has 2 white dots in the black spot on the forewing, suggesting a Gatekeeper, but the hind wings don't have any white dots and the markings look more like a Meadow Brown?
No pics of the upper wings I'm afraid.

Meadow Brown for me. I don't think the one spot/two spot rule is hard and fast.

We were discussing this very point at Southwater Woods yesterday and we had definite meadow browns with two white dots.

A good feature to check for Gatekeeper in this pose with wings shut, is that this species has several small white spots in the post-discal area of the hind wing. |

Thanks Deb and Dave. Aeshna, yes, that's what made me doubt that it was a Gatekeeper.
Another reason I thought MB was its thuggish behaviour. It chased away a Peacock, Comma and Red Admiral - all in the space of a couple of minutes!

Some folk from England were on our nature ramble yesterday and cried out 'Gatekeeper' when they saw this butterfly. I had a hard time convincing them it was a MB because of the two white spots on the forewing. Later I checked and saw that not only would a Gatekeeper be a first for Islay, it would be a first for Scotland too!
