Hi Folks, we saw this Painted Lady yesterday, near Shrewsbury, very battered 
Is it one of the first arrivals or maybe over-wintered?

That's not a Painted Lady. It's a Small Tortoiseshell, and almost certainly an over winter one. |

I can see why you thought it might be a PL, but this specimen has lost so much of its blue cresents on the outer edge of the wings that at first glance the colours are similar. It would be nice if we had a huge migration of PL's into this country again, like we had in 2009.
