An ID help but no photos :(

I wonder if anyone can help with this one? Whilst out over the Shropshire Hills today which is full of heather and gorse, I saw butterlifes that I am unfamiliar with. However, it was windy so I hadn't got a hope of taking a pic....so thought I would go for the best description that I could.
They were about the same shape as painted ladies with those almost pointed wings. They were brown/speckled colour but not speckled wood, I would have known those and they were the wrong wing shape.
Size wise, they were not as small as a Small Copper but, probably about the same size as a Speckled Wood. They flew really quickly and strongly across the heather a bit like Brimstones do (on a mission) but, perhaps that was the wind factor. Any ideas?

I suspect one of the day flying moths- the variable Common Heath might be one potential candidate.
