| | | Butterfly ID, UK Saw several butterflies today in Middlesex, a Red Admiral, a distant White of some sort, 2 Speckled Wood, and 2 of these Blues:
Now I'm not too good with the blues, is this a Common or a Small Blue?
Thanks,
Nige |

| | | Re: Butterfly ID, UK The easiest thing to consider is that small blue and common blue are first active around late May/June so any blue butterfly around at the moment is likely to be a holly blue.
Its quite hard to explain as there are around 7 moderately similar species. Common blue have a totally different underwing pattern compared to the other two species. Small blue have a different order of black spots which tend to be much more clear, and the butterfly is much darker especially on top of the wings. Additionally habitat and behaviour can all be used to tell the three apart.

Nige | Holly Blue is the common urban blue that is frequently seen in city gardens, churchyards, etc. I've seen no fewer than 8 individuals today. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
