Hi Alan,
I'm guessing this was in a butterfly house  I know very little about tropical species, but this looks like The Clipper - Parthenos sylvia to me.

I looked at this and decided it was not a British species and couldn't identify it. Surely this site is about British wildlife?

Yes as Guy says it is a Clipper Parthenos sylvia

Sorry if I seemed like I was getting my knickers in a twist there! It's just that I have enough trouble identifying our native insects without adding European ones into the mix  . Please accept my apologies Al2y if I seemed rude and welcome to WAB, I promise we're not all nasty!  .
