White-Letter Hairstreak? i.d.
Is this the above named butterfly seen in my garden today feeding on potentilla.It didn't open its wings till it flew away so I only got the underside

Well done on an excellent garden butterfly. I think they rarely if ever open their wings (unless they are flying of course). I've certainly never seen one with the wings open anyway.

An excellent garden tick, I've never seen one nectaring low down, only hiding in the treetops.
