| | | Meadow Browns? Hiya
I'm looking for confirmation (or otherwise) that the following 3 photo's are the same type of butterfly (the Meadow Brown) please.
Pic 1 seems different to Pic 2 and Pic 3 and they are confusing me somewhat - are they faded Meadow Browns or possibly a False Meadow Browns (or have I been looking at butterfly ID books for too long lol?) Pic 1

| | | Re: Meadow Browns? Cheers Naturenutz 1 & 3 being the same would make sense.
2 does look like a Gatekeeper to me too but are you saying that Gatekeepers are also known as Hedge Browns? That's just not fair / too confusing lol |

| | | Re: Meadow Browns? yes purplepixii gatekeeper is also know as hedge brown .Just to confuse you lol.I really need to study the browns more, the only thing i was certain off in your pictures is that gatekeepers tend to hold their wings forward a little as if very alert ready to fly, where as meadow browns front wings often appear slightly held back rather the fully displayed if you know what i mean . |

| | | Re: Meadow Browns? Number 2 is definitely a gatekeeper. Look closely at the black spot on the wing, it will have 2 definite white spots inside if it is a gatekeeper and 1 white spot if it is a Meadow brown. This is also true of the underside of the wing. Hope this is helpful.
