| | Smooth green caterpillar? Hello all,
Please could someone help identify a caterpillar I found in the garden today?
It is bright green in appearance, and does not appear to have any hairs or distinct markings, about 3cm long.
Sorry, I couldn't get a photograph
Many thanks |

Your description could fit a couple of hundred caterpillars at least. Even with a photograph it's not always possible to get a good I.D.

Thankyou for taking the time to reply. The caterpillar now appears to be spinning a cocoon (if that is the right term), so hopefully we will get to found out in the not too distant future! |

| | | Re: Smooth green caterpillar? Hello Greenbayleaf,
Whilst gathering Sallow leaves to feed my batch of Puss Moth larvae, now thankfully all pupated I came across two smooth green larvae, these have also fed up and pupated in cocoons that each spun up between two leaves.
When they hatch I will advise you what appeared, but when they will hatch is anyone's guess. It could be in a few weeks or next year.
I hope yours hatch out.

Yes, I was wondering how long I might have to wait before I saw anything. I know very little about butterflies or moths, but my 2 year old is fascinated about what is happening, so we look forward to seeing what happens! |

My two pupa hatched out, they were both Herald Moths one of the most beautiful species in Britain. These larvae didn't have the usual red spot on the side if their body just aft of the head, which all previous Herald Moths I have bred have had.
The Herald overwinters as an adult, many moths remain in their pupa up to ten months or so, others just a week or two.

| | | Re: Smooth green caterpillar? My attempt at cabbage growing has been invaded by small white butterflies with quite a few green caterpillars now eating their way through the crop, could be the answer.

Our coccon has hatched, and this was the result! After getting a couple of pictures, we saw it safely ouside.
Perhaps someone might be able to identify it?
Thanks |

| | | Re: Smooth green caterpillar? Yes i think its a silver y too. They are a summer migrant, often arriving in large numbers.Often active in daytime as well as night. They vibrate their wings extremely fast and rarely remain still in my experience, always buzzing around. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
