My first White Admiral!

I treated the dogs and myself to a trip to Pamber Forest today, one of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Nature Reserves and saw my first ever White Admiral and Silver-washed fritillaries; I was so pleased . As I had the dogs, we skirted around the reserve itself, staying on the common but there were still plenty of butterflies to see. Just the one White Admiral, but plenty of S-W fritillaries, gatekeepers, Meadow Browns, Ringlets and Small and Large Skippers. No decent photos to show off as they were very unwilling subjects . There are reputed to be Purple Emperors there too, but not where we were. Needless to say we'll be visiting again as it's only 20 minutes away and met a chap who'd driven from Epping to be there!

Always good to see these gliding along a glade. They do appear to be having a good season. Silver-washed Fritillaries are always spectacular too.

At my local woods there have easily been 100+ white admirals flying recently. Nearly equally good numbers of silver washed fritillary too, although some of these seem to be getting quite worn now.

WA are beautiful butterflies, particularly the undersides, so well done on spotting your first one.
