Yes they are male and female, the 1st lighter coloured one is a female,and the darker one a male.

I think you mean Hedge Brown or Gatekeeper as they are more usually known, they have two white dots in the black spot on the forewing while Meadow Brown only has one (at least that's my way of telling them apart) and also appear more orange overall than brown.
