i think it is a ringlet (aphantopus hyperantus)

Thanks. I think you are correct.

Both my books show the underside of the wings only - not that helpful. I do have anotherr field guide bu the colour is slightly different. I have searched the Gallery on WAB and found a complete replica of my shot.

Yes I would also like to confirm Ringlet. I was only looking at them yesterday evening with over 20 + feeding on bramble
