Silky catterpillar cocoons in the hedgerow? What are they?

I have noticed over the last 5 years an increasing number of silk covered patches of hedgerow which contain small cream caterpillars which have completely defoliated the hedge. Can anyone identify which month these catepillars turn into?

Hello Cowvet,

These are almost certainly the webs spun by one of the 'Ermine' micro moths.
There are several species, all silver with minute black or brown spots on the wings.

They are often present in their thousands and the Bird Cherry Ermine can completely defoliate fully grown trees.

Many thanks! We've managed to find them in our butterfly book. Certainly looks to be a major problem in Herefordshire hedges this year!
