Hiya
Could a kind soul ID this caterpillar for me please? I feel like I should know what it is and it's driving me mad !

Hi Purplepixii
The first one looks like a large White, and the second one could be black-viened white, I must look for a book on caterpillars, I have some on butterflies with their caterpillars with them this is how I checked up on these two, if I am not right perhaps some one out there will put us both out of our misery. Do you get black-veined white butterflies in your area.

Hi Gracie, according to a leaflet I picked up yesterday whilst at Magdalen Hill Down they get Green-Veined Whites, Large Whites, Small Whites and Marbled Whites....
I too have books on Butterflies but they never seem to have enough info on corresponding caterpillars - quite annoying isn't it?  |

The first is a Small tortoishell butterfly and the second is a yellow tail moth

Many thanks | It looks like it's on Nettle so it's almost definitely a Small Tortoiseshell.... Though it does look a little pale

It's definitely not a Black Veined White!!! It's a moth larva... I'll check it out and get back to you soon...

Dear All,
Many thanks for the info to Purplepixie which I am glad to read too, I have been away for two weeks so not caught up with anything, but I am glad we found out what they were, even if I was sooooo wrong, but many thanks, I do need a proper book just on caterpillars, they are so interesting, sadly though all this knowledge I am trying to acquire just wont stay in my brain!!!
